June 1st, 1074.
It’s my first day at the testing facility. They’re calling it the Helios project. Not very creative. But that's what the boss wanted. I unpacked all of my things in our shared quarters. Lab sector 001. It’s incredibly drab. I’ve put up a few decorations to make it pretty. Today all I really did was get ready for testing. Paperwork. Introductions. Nothing truly interesting. I met the four men I will be working with until this is over. McCoy. Daniels. Weaver. And of course, Vaughan. Our shiny leader will all this research experience. To be perfectly honest, I don’t fancy any of them. Men will be men. Men with degrees and shiny diplomas are even worse. It doesn’t matter if I am a doctor, I’m a woman. So on the first day I’m making coffee.
At least I have my journal. I’ve chosen to write this in code. I created this code in college, as a personal project. If you’re reading this because you’ve decoded it, good job. I’ve trusted you enough to let you sit down with my words. And you're pretty smart. Or maybe you found this book, far in the future. Either way, good job I suppose.
I hope tomorrow will be different. I hope that my coworkers see that I’m a competent scientist and doctor of my own, and treat me well. Maybe not one of the boys, but well. A girl can dream.
